Uniting West Africa’s next generation of leaders to shape policy, governance, and the future of the region.

West Africa Young Parliamentarian Network is uniting West Africa’s next generation of leaders to shape policy, governance, and the future of the region.

Objective

WAYPA advances youth-centered policy advocacy, meaningful participation in decision-making, and cross-border collaboration among young parliamentarians in West Africa. Through strategic partnerships, structured mentorship, and leadership development, it equips emerging leaders to influence governance, strengthen institutions, and drive legislative impact. At the same time, it promotes peacebuilding and social cohesion by empowering young leaders to bridge divides and support inclusive, stable societies across the region.

The Essence of WAYPA

WAYPA was established in 2023 following the 6th Annual Youth Education and Leadership Conference in Buchanan City, Liberia, where young parliamentarians and emerging leaders from across West Africa came together to address the persistent underrepresentation of youth in governance. Recognizing the need for a unified and structured platform, they agreed to formalize their collaboration, pool their legislative influence, and create a permanent, action-oriented network. The result was WAYPA—a regional body anchored in Liberia and spanning ECOWAS member states—focused on translating youth engagement into tangible policy impact at national, regional, and continental levels.
The mission is being launched now because we are in the midst of a revolution in computing driven by artificial intelligence and quantum information technologies. There is a strategic need to maintain leadership and bridge the productivity gap in scientific progress.
WAYPA operates through a transparent and representative governance structure designed to ensure all member states have a voice and that decisions are made democratically. At the top level, the General Assembly serves as the Network’s highest decision-making body, setting policy direction, ratifying leadership decisions, and approving major strategic initiatives. Supporting this is the Executive Committee—comprising the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary General—which provides strategic leadership, external representation, and overall direction.

The Secretariat, based in Liberia and led by the Secretary General, functions as the operational hub, coordinating programs, partnerships, and communications across the region. At the national level, Country Chapters in each ECOWAS member state drive local engagement, advocacy, and membership growth, while feeding priorities into the broader regional agenda. Together, these structures ensure coordinated action, accountability, and effective representation across all levels of the Network.
We are looking for strategic partners, structured mentorship, and leadership development collaborators. To learn more about how you can contribute to shaping the future of policy and governance, click here to contact our team.
